Rewards And Fairies. Kipling, Rudyard.

First edition, first impression, this copy finely bound by Bayntun. Rewards and Fairies features the first appearance in book form of the poem "If", published here on 4 October shortly after its appearance in the American Magazine issue of October 1910. The poem was originally composed in 1895 as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson following his failed raid against the Boers. It was immediately popular and remains Kipling's most enduring poem. A collection of verses and stories, this title was published as a continuation of Puck of Pook's Hill (1906). Martindell 125; Richards A242; Stewart 329. Octavo (183 x 125 mm). Mid-20th-century red calf by Bayntun, spine with raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, yellow and green labels, double border to covers, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. With 4 halftone plates by Frank Craig, red border to title page. Bound without publisher's ads. Small stamp and ownership ticket to first blank of one Maxwell Griffiths. A near-fine copy.
