A handsomely bound copy of Napoleon's maxims. The present edition prints the original French text published by A. G. de Liancourt in 1848 alongside the English translation by J. A. Manning, which was first published the same year. Small quarto (163 x 127 mm). Contemporary brown morocco, spine with five raised bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, spine and covers ruled and dotted in gilt, trifoliate tools to covers in gilt, turn-ins ruled in gilt, edges gilt. Title page printed in red and black, text printed in French and English. Ownership signature of Sir Basil Montgomery, 5th Baronet (1852-1928), dated 1905, to front free endpaper. Tiny marks to covers, a near-fine copy.
